The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand invites the Wellington Jewish Community to attend this year's Yom HaShoah ceremony, '80th Anniversary of Hungarian Jewish Deportations'.
2024 marks the 80th anniversary of of Hungarian Jewish Deportations, and as such is our theme.
In 1944, the deportation of Hungarian Jews represented one of the most horrific episodes of the Holocaust during World War II. Following the German occupation of Hungary in March 1944, the Nazi regime, led by Adolf Eichmann and his collaborators, implemented a systematic plan to exterminate the Jewish population of Hungary. This deportation began on 15 May 1944 until 9 July 1944, and in 56 short days, the vibrant and historic Jewish community of Hungary was decimated.
It is estimated that during the deportation of Hungarian Jews in 1944, approximately 437,000 to 500,000 individuals were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the vast majority perished. This campaign of destruction represented a tragic chapter in the history of the Holocaust, illustrating the depths of human cruelty and the horrors of genocide.
The Yom HaShoah event starts at 5 PM.
Doors open at 4.30 PM.
